IO and autism support class
At Lake Albert Public School, we offer a specialist IO and autism support class for students from Kindergarten to Year 6. Our support class caters to students who have a moderate intellectual disability and/or autism. We provides a caring, inclusive environment where every child is encouraged to learn, grow and thrive.
How to enrol
You can’t enrol your child directly into a support class, but we can help you with this process. Our school will work with you to determine if your child is eligible and if our support class will meet their needs.
A local support class panel considers the application and decides an outcome.
Eligibility
A support class is available when:
- your child has significant support needs and meets the department's disability criteria
-
this type of specialist support will meet their educational needs
-
an application is completed in collaboration with you.

A supportive learning environment
The support class has a small group setting of up to 10 students, allowing for personalised attention. Students follow the same NSW curriculum as their peers, with lessons tailored to meet individual learning needs.
Subjects include:
- English
- Mathematics
- Science and technology
- History and geography
- Creative and performing arts
- Personal development, health and physical education (PDHPE)
Learning also includes important life skills such as cooking, food preparation, shopping, excursions and building social skills.
Individual education plans (IEPs)
Every student in our support class has an individual education plan (IEP). Teachers work closely with parents to identify learning priorities and create a program that supports each child’s needs.
At our school, progress is:
- Reported to parents at the end of Terms 2 and 4.
- Reviewed formally once a year with parents, the principal, school counsellors and class teachers.
- Discussed at any time upon parent or carer request.
Playground and social opportunities
Students in our support class enjoy the playground with their peers across the school. Supervision is adjusted to meet each child’s needs. Some students play independently, while others are supported by a school learning support officer (SLSO).
